Mediation

Mediation reduces your divorce bill and avoids stress because you and your spouse shoulder the burden of gathering and sharing information yourselves.  And while the mediator's hourly rates may be similar to those of your attorney, you'll spend less time with the mediator than with your attorney in a contested case.

You and your spouse can opt to go it without attorneys and participate in "pro se" mediation.  You, your spouse, and the mediator agree to meet for scheduled times to work out a Marital Settlement Agreement.  That Agreement becomes incorporated into the Final Judgment of Divorce. Many mediators can draft these documents for you.  Usually, only one spouse need attend the final hearing which typically lasts only a few minutes.

Even if you decide to divorce using "pro se" mediation, it is advisable for each spouse to retain separate lawyers in order to review the final settlement before it is signed.  Many lawyers will charge a nominal consult fee for this service.
